Glare is the enemy
The fastest way to make an outdoor space unpleasant is a bright fixture in somebody's line of sight. A bare bulb at eye height makes everything behind it disappear, so the yard turns into a black wall. Aim for illumination without a visible bulb.
Bistro and string lighting
Strung lights above a patio create a ceiling where there was not one. A patio without them is a slab under an open sky. Add a canopy of light and the area has walls it did not have. Keep them warm and low, always.None of this is a question of spending more, since most of what separates a good patio from a harsh one is where things point.

Warm light near where people sit
Anybody who has sat under a bright outdoor light in July has shared it with insects. Insects are drawn more strongly to the cool end, which is a second argument for keeping patio light warm. It will not eliminate anything, and that is not a claim worth making. But it is a free consideration when choosing the setting.If a permanent system covers the rear elevation, set it warm and low for evenings outside, so nothing competes.
