What tends to earn it
Some things reward being lit and plenty do not. Anything with texture responds well, because light raking across a rough surface creates shadow and shadow creates interest. Flat painted siding mostly just gets brighter. Shape helps too: a tree with structure, an arch, a column, a gable peak.
Where accent plans fall apart
Plans go wrong by addition. One feature becomes four as the plan grows. At some point the property is evenly lit, and the accents stop being accents. Direction is a mood decision. Uplighting throws shadows upward, which nothing in nature does, so it reads as dramatic and slightly theatrical. Downlighting from up in a tree or under a soffit imitates moonlight, so it feels natural and calm.
A maintenance note
Landscape accents point at plants, and plants move. A shrub uplit perfectly when it went in will grow past the beam. It is not a fault, it is just how it works. Re aiming is worth doing periodically.The test is always the same: go outside at night and look at it. If a fixture has drifted off the subject, it takes a moment to correct.
